Jimmy and Katerina were bickering in the front and Antonis was listening to his own music on a pair of headphones in the back, next to Ren.

Ren’s leg wouldn’t stop shaking, out of beat to the Greek folk music that was blasting through the speakers.

He checked the time on his phone for what felt like the hundredth time and looked out the car window at the bright blue sky.

It had cleared up a lot more over the last couple of weeks and even the temperature had been a lot more consistent, which meant Ren had spent a lot of time outside, especially that fated rooftop where he’d made the mistake of kissing Jimmy.

He looked at the man behind the wheel, his fresh haircut with straight sharp edges on his neck, the five o’clock shadow, which seemed like a permanent fixture on his face no matter what.

Ren didn’t like it, but he’d memorised so many of Jimmy’s features that they haunted him, day and night, awake or asleep.

It was starting to become a problem. Especially so since he’d barely seen or interacted with Jimmy since that morning on the roof.

He didn’t know where they stood.

Or more accurately, he did and didn’t like it one bit.

But the most important, and worrying, question circling his mind was whether he had completely ruined his friendship with Jimmy.

He had tried to convince himself it wasn’t the case, but all things considered, he was starting to lose hope.

All of a sudden, Jimmy pulled over on the side of the motorway and both he and Katerina swapped seats.

Ren looked at Antonis who dismissed the silent question and rolled his eyes.

“What happened?” he asked when Katerina started driving again.

“Eh nothing,” she replied.

“We’re just getting to the airport and there’s always police around stopping cars for stupid reasons. We don’t want to give them a legitimate one,” Jimmy explained, glancing at the rearview.

All Ren could see when he looked at Jimmy’s eyes were the moments just before they kissed, the feel of Jimmy’s intoxicated breath, the hearts pounding over one another, and the taste of his lips that still lingered no matter how many weeks passed.

“Oh, so you don’t have your licence?” Ren asked.

Jimmy shook his head and looked down as if he was ashamed.

“But he can drive, he just gets nervous on exam,” Katerina said.

“Yeah, I always choke,” Jimmy said.

“Ha! That’s what she said,” Antonis commented beside Ren.

He and his girlfriend laughed, but all Jimmy did was stare back at Ren through the rearview mirror with a sad expression.

Ren wanted to reach out, to touch his shoulder, give it a squeeze, give him a hug even, but he didn’t know what that would do. He didn’t know where he stood with his friend anymore and it was torture. He never imagined he’d find himself in the same position again, not after his last heartbreak, but he’d gone and fucked up once again.

“We’re here,” Katerina said a few minutes later and Ren blinked back to the present, realising they were parked.
